Philae Temple

The Philae Temple located on the Agilkia Island near Aswan, Egypt is one of the best remaining old Egyptian architecture and religious devotion. The temple was constructed on Philae Island, where it was to honor the goddess Isis, the goddess of love, healing and motherhood. Architectural Brilliance and Spiritual Significance:

The temple complex is a mix of Egyptian and Greco-Roman architecture, built in the Ptolemaic period (4th century BCE — 1st century CE) and added to during Roman times. The global significance of the site is underscored by its move in the 1960s when it was relocated to make way for Lake Naser, as part of a UNESCO Nubian Salvage Project. This immense project relocated the temple, stone by stone from its original location to Agilkia Island, saving it from being immersed by the waters of Lake Nasser, as a consequence of the Aswan High Dam construction. Such a move reflects the importance of preserving culture, evidenced by how it was moved elsewhere to preserve it for the future.

The temple is oriented with two huge pylons, or monumental gateways, to the inner sanctuaries. Elaborate reliefs show the pharaohs making offerings to the gods, flanked by mythological scenes on these pylons. Made into Pharaonic reliefs and hieroglyphics that honor Isis, but also tell stories thousands of years old about Osiris, Horus, and other gods from bark unto stone.

Hypostyle Hall of Philae Temple:

Perhaps the most distinguishing characteristic of the Philae Temple is its vast Hypostyle Hall, which contains towering columns decorated with intricate floral and geometric patterns. Behind this hall is the inner sanctuary, where once was the cult image of Isis. Other sections of the complex contain small shrines to other deities, including Hathor and Osiris, which added complexity to the spiritual experience at that milieu.

Preservation and Modern Legacy:

The Temple of Philae is denoted as the last bastion of ancient Egyptian religion. It served as a place of worship until Emperor Justinian attempted to close it in CE 571, thus effectively ending the pagan period in Egypt.
