The Grand Egyptian Museum is the world's largest archaeological museum. The idea of creating an art space for showing Egypt ancient treasures was convinced in the 1990s. The construction of the museum was started in 2002 but was delayed due to funding issues. Museum was partially opened for tourists in 2023 but its complete opening is expected in 2025.

GEM is located on the outskirts of Cairo and just 2 km away from the Giza plateau. The museum is easily reachable for the tourists and locals as it is in between the modern city and ancient pyramids. Its presence enhances the tourist experience of seeing world wonder and treasures alongside.

The Grand Egyptian Museum shows Egypt 's rich history of over 5,000 years. The aim was to gather all artifacts that are scattered and facing placement issues in other museums. This museum faced funding issues in past years during the development but resumed after getting a 300 million dollar  loan from the Japanese government.

Architecture of Grand Egyptian Museum:

Architecture of GEM shows the glimpse of pyramids which are in triangular shape. The design of the museum was selected through an international competition which was proposed by Irish architecture. The Grand Egyptian museum holds 480,000 square meters.  Walls of the museum were made with translucent stone from which natural light filters and creates a majestic atmosphere. Museum has enough space to handle the millions of annual visitors.

  • There are more than 100,000 artifacts on display and some of them are those that have not been displayed before in public.
  • Museum shows the history of ancient Egyptian predynastic to the Greco-Roman period journey. 
  • There are also options to experience ancient stories and artifacts through modern technologies like virtual reality. 
  • There are a lot of ancient Egyptian mummies on display that enhanced your exploration. Also, there is a lab which takes care of the ancient mummies of royals, officials, workers and even animal mummies.
  • There is a statue of Ramses II as well which is about 3200 years old and weighs 82 tons.
  • There was also a solar boat of King Khufu on display which was transported from Giza.
  • There are 19 labs for handling ( vase, glass and metal artifacts ), a microbiological lab, wooden lab and stone lab as well.
  • There are also more than 5,000 artifacts from the collection of King Tutankhamun's on display.

Yes, the Grand Egyptian museum (GEM) is worth visiting as it gives you a chance to explore ancient history from the Egyptian predynastic era to the greco-roman period. In the museum there are some artifacts that have not been displayed before. This is the world's largest archaeological museum. The prime location of the museum makes it easily accessible in one trip to the Giza pyramids and museum.

 

Opening hours of the GEM Museum:

Museum is open every single day for the visit as it has four time slots in which people will have a 2 hour exploration session. Slots are 10 am, 12 am, 2 pm & 4 pm and there is also a light show after sunset probably at 6pm
